Abstraction
Abstraction is when the photographer mainly concentrates on shape, colour, pattern, form, and texture. The viewer is mainly unable to see the whole object, the photo is mostly a small part of an idea of an image. The photo should only be part of a whole object, not showing the whole object but just a section of it.
This can mostly be done by taking close up photos of the side of the object, the corner, the middle, or by taking halves or quarters of the object. Or not, i dont get it really |
My abstract images
Alan CohenAlan Cohens work is rather simple but he does capture different types of lines and textures, capturing great abstract images.
i think he also does well in making sure that the lines stand out above everything else within the image, for example, the image being in black and white makes the white coloured lines really pop out and brighten up the image. You can definitely see a lot of shapes and patterns in his images |
My abstract images 2
With these images i actually knew what i was taking pictures of, i had elements to focus on to make the image look abstract.
I chose three elements to focus on when taking photos and those elements were texture, light, and lines. I tried to capture all the elements within one photo if i could but if not then id do the elements separately. |
My Abstract images 3 (light and texture)With these photos i have tried to mainly focus on light and texture which went pretty well. I especially like the pictures where I have captured the sun just shining in the sky or reflecting off the sea, i also like the ones where i've taken a picture of the lights and the lamp post which was one of my most successful because its just light in the dark that is the main focus of the image.
Another picture that i think is successful is the one of the bridge with the sun shining in the corner/horizon |
Peter Keetman similaritiesI think that my images are pretty similar to this artist's work because of the way he composes his images.
The formal elements that he has chosen (light and texture) seem to be in these images which is why I have chosen to display them here. In the first image you can see the smooth texture of all the little droplets in the image, you can also see the light reflecting off the droplets. In a few of my images you can see that i have tried to capture the light reflecting off surfaces and puddles, I have also tried to capture the texture of surfaces by taking close up images like he has. I could try to capture light reflecting off all types of surfaces. |
Francesca Woodman
She was born April 3 1958, she was born in to an artistic family so being a photographer probably came naturally to her.
She studied at Rhode Island School of Design and then later on moved to New York City in 1979 to begin her her career as a photographer. She has eighteen rare vintage black and white that was once owned by her boyfriend, and is now in the Artist Room display. She is well known for her nude photos of young women, photos that were blurred, had long exposures, and a slow shutter speed. She also included herself in a lot of her photographs . All her photos were taken using a film camera which is why they are so vintage/black and white and is also why they are quite blurry. I think a formal element that she mostly used was disguise because in a lot of her photographs, any models she used would have their face covered in some sort of way, i also think that she likes to use light in a lot of her pictures because her photos seem quite bright and might ever include shades of sunlight reflecting off the wall. |
Final pieces
I chose the first experiment because i really liked the exquisite colours that are shown as they are bright but seem to be almost transparent, i also feel like the image looks quite surreal.
For the second image I chose it because I liked the combination of the lined pattern mixed with the lighting and shading. |
To choose my final pieces i had researched a photographer called Peter Keetman, i had chose to research his work because it was pretty similar to what i was trying to capture.
A few of his images were taken up close and really did capture the texture and if you scroll up I have uploaded to of his pictures because they especially interest me.
In the two pictures he has captured the two elements that I have been trying to work on which was texture and light which i thought he had done really well,
in the two pictures he was able to capture the smooth texture of all the water/rain droplets and the light that reflects off them.
I have used those examples to choose these two photos as I feel like they are similar in how i have captured the textures and light.
To take these images I had to use a professional camera which I borrowed off a friend so that I was actually able to capture then texture of what ever i was trying to take a picture of.
I really like how I captured the light in the the first image because it really does make you focus on the bright colours that its emitting and the way the blue light is sort of creating a flowing pattern really does look beautiful.
I had also used my friends camera to take a bunch more photos but only a few really ended up how i wanted to so found this project pretty hard to do as it was quite hard for me to find the things I wanted to take pictures of and at the start of this project is when I found it especially difficult because i didnt really have a full understanding of what abstraction is and was sort of confused on what to do when i was set tasks but it did become a bit easier as i went on through the project.
