Clothing intro
I chose clothing because it seemed like a 'fun' theme to choose. I think that there are many opportunities to be creative, for example I am interested in the fashion photography from Jacob Sutton I first found out about him through Pinterest and I like his photographs because he has done a load of different experiments around this theme keeping some variety in what he does. Most of his experiments were his own ideas which has helped me figure out what I am going to do for my own project. I also think that clothing has a very wide variety of other themes within itself which will let me expand all ideas I have planned giving me variety in what I am able to do, I will also be able to adapt should anything go wrong. I will be buying my own resources and coming up with my own costumes, for example I have already come up with what I plan to do for my final experiment, I will be using a dark setting and using uv paint & lighting with a group of 3-4 people.
Before that I will be travelling around central london taking pictures of everyday civilian clothing from work to casual clothing.

Everyday pedestrian clothing
When taking these images I was trying to capture what people wear in there daily lives and had only just realised when doing so that there was a lot of variety in what people wore as each individual person had there own unique style. It ranged from casual clothing to formal to just a crazy/random mix of clothing. It has helped me come up with what style of clothing I would like to use for future experiments.
The style that I am particularly interested in because of this is classy/smart clothing as I think it will suit best with what I plan to do and the locations I am gonna go to as I would like a nice style of clothing to go with the background. When taking these images I didn't really think about the background which I think is bad as the picture would've looked a lot more appealing had I of thought about the background. So that my clothing page is more interesting I am not only going to take pictures of formal clothing but I will also be exploring other styles of clothing, for example casual, high end clothing, business wear, and/or clothing for special events. |
The overhead lighting and the dark background gives the image a really nice balance of contrast. I plan to use overhead lighting and a dark background as it makes the image come out really well. The mannequins are wearing formal clothing that which is also the type of clothing I plan to use when doing future photoshoots and experiments. I also like the way that the mannequins are posing because it just looks nicer and I plan to use that pose as well as many others for future photoshoots.

Jacob Sutton
Jacob sutton is a professional photographer that has worked with many fashion models. I really like how he works with contrast in all of his images, he manages to capture the light shining on his models really well. He had to compose his photographs so that all of his models was doing some sort of pose. In each image his models have their own unique pose which is something I plan to use within my own experiments/pictures. A lot of his models seem to be wearing very formal clothing/interesting clothing. Also the colour of the clothing that his models are wearing seem to, in one way or another, match/come in to contrast with the background. For example light colours for a brighter background and darker colours for a dark background.

Clothing styles
For this set of images I went to some cloth shops and took pictures of some mannequins for some inspiration as each individual mannequin in different shops were wearing their own pair cloths and was always doing some sort of pose which really helped me to come up with many ideas of my own, also helping me to decide what style of clothing I wanted use for my future experiments/photoshoot. Really all of these images are just meant for inspiration on what style of clothing I wanted to use for future experiments/photoshoots from just casual cloths to smart business wear.
Photoshoot experiment 1
This was my first photoshoot experiment, I was just testing some poses that I might want use for future purposes. I was also testing out how much lighting I wanted to use and was also trying out a white background which made the images come out more brighter. When doing this mini photoshoot I did not really ask the people that were modelling for me to wear any single style of clothing
Yanzhou Bao
I have taken interest in this photographer because he makes his models do a variety of dynamic poses and not just the typal modelling poses.
He also seems to like to use bright coloured lighting in many of his images for example the colours that stand out to me the most is pink and blue as they show up in quite a few of his images. The background that he may use tends to vary depending on how bright he wants the picture to turn out, varying from black to dark blue to a plain white background. Also it seems that he has used double exposure for a couple of his pictures which I really like because it adds a really nice and interesting element within the photos that I would really like to play around with for future experiments. |
I think that this image has external lights because the image seems to have 2 or 3 bright lights shining directly onto the model causing the model to glow along with the fact that she is wearing very reflective clothing. Also the lights that the photographer used seems to shine bright colours, The dark background puts all the focus of the image onto the model making her really stand out.
He seems to have also used double exposure because the image has a blur that surrounds the model which makes it look very interesting. Normal artist would make the model stand in a normal however this artist made the model stand in a different way. |
Photoshoot experiment 2
I had really enjoyed doing this photoshoot because I was able to play with the colour of the lighting and making it blend really well. I had used different brights lights although one was a little more dim and was a more orange/yellow colour. This made the lights blend very well and caused a little effect where the bright light would shine on one side of the model and the dimmer light would shine on the other side of the model.
The ideas that I got for the poses was inspired by an artist that I had previously researched called Yanzhou Bao as well as looking at a couple photoshoot books with pictures from other artists and there photoshoots, this allowed me to come up with ideas of what poses I wanted to use letting them vary from both dynamic poses and just normal poses.
The area I had used to do this photoshoot was the studio and I chose this area because it provided me with all the equipment I needed to do my photoshoot. It 3 background colours that I could choose from which were black, white, and green of which I chose black. It also had many lights that I could use making it an ideal place for me to do the photoshoot.
I asked one of my models to wear some smart business cloths to see if that would be a nice style of clothing to take pictures and although the pictures came out well I did not find that style of clothing very appealing as it seems rather plain and dull, because of that I told them to just change into casual clothing which I think was a better choice because I prefer that style of clothing since the clothing can be very unique depending on the person.

Photoshop experiments
Final piece 1
To create these set of image I would always choose three pictures from my second photoshoot experiment and began blending them together. To make so that I was able to blend the pictures together I just moved two of the images I wanted to use onto one tab with another one of the pictures I wanted to use and lowered the opacity on two of the images. These images have this weird effect which I really like the look and where I think makes them look better, it looks almost as though I have been taking picture using double exposures whereas it has been edited to have multiple frames in one image.
The lighting makes it look like it goes from dark tone to a brighter tone or from a bright tone to a darker tone

Pictures using the blackbird fly
The camera I had used for these set of images was the blackbird fly with a roll of film. I began taking pictures of people just doing dynamic poses but half way through using the camera I began to accidentally do double exposures without realising. This turned out very well in my opinion because the images look rather mystical or fantasy like, making the images look a lot more interesting and eye catching. I really like how the natural lighting gives the images quite a nice tone as the image is bright but almost has a shade of darkness over it. The camera that I had used to take these images was the blackbird fly and since it was not a digital camera but a film camera it was best that I did not use any artificial lighting and instead just used the natural lighting, also the natural lighting will allow the film camera to capture a lot more.
Photoshop edits
Final piece 2
I chose these images because they are two of three images where I had double exposures except I like these ones the most because I feel as though they came out the best. These images weren't meant to be double exposures but were meant to be just normal film pictures of dynamic poses, however it not turn out that way because I had accidentally forgot to wind the camera or for the second one I had not winded the film properly meaning these were happy accidents.
I also think that the dynamic poses that I had asked them to do came out really well with the double exposures and makes it look much better since it looks like some sort of superhero type picture where the person is running fast. When thinking about the composition I ask my models to stand in front of a plain brick wall and gave them what dynamic poses I wanted them to do however in the second image it appears I was not being aware about where I was aiming the lense and I happened to capture a window which is another thing that I did not intend to happen. The colours on the images seem a little bit washed out giving the image a sort of 90s picture effect which I kinda like as it makes the images look quite mystical.

Unit 2 final evaluation
At the start of this project I had began doing most my research on pinterest to see what clothing was all about as I did not have much of an idea on what to do. What I found out was that it was more than just taking pictures of people in cloths, I saw multiple different styles of cloths and ways of doing photoshoots. I then began making a mind map of different paths I could potentially take with the project and the different styles of clothing I could use.
I then decided that I wanted to see all the styles of clothing people wear in the city so that I would be able to get a feel for what type of clothing I wanted to use. This helped me a lot as I saw multiple different styles, from casual wear to business clothing, smart wear and I even saw a man with a huge amount of cloths and accessories on.
After that I started doing research on a artist called Jacob Sutton and this is where I was beginning to take an interest in doing actual photoshoots using artificial lighting as well as natural lighting for later on. This was because I really liked the was that the photographer had composed his pictures as they showed very nice and balanced use of contrast and lighting as well as some interesting backgrounds.
I then went out to some cloth stores and took pictures of different clothing to see if I wanted to use specific designer brands or just any style of clothing.
Next I began doing my own and first photoshoot which was mainly to check different poses that I might want to use and how much lighting I want to use and also if I wanted to use a white background which needed up not being the choice I wanted to go for.
once I done that I had found a photographer called Yanzhou Bao and began doing research on him and what really took my interest about this photographer was that he would tend use many dynamic poses, he would also use a lot of bright colours in his images through lighting, background or after edits. I also liked the way he used double exposure.
I then began doing my second photo in which I had started properly composing my images and the models that I was using. I had asked them to do certain poses and get into the positions that I wanted them in. I had really enjoyed this photoshoot because I feel as though most the images from this photoshoot came out really because the dark background allowed for the lighting to stand out more which I liked because you could really see the colour of the lights. I also tried taking the pictures in black and white during the photoshoot but I preferred the colour of the lighting that came out on the images.
After that I started working on my first set of final pieces where I had used photoshop to combine some of the images creating one merged image of the same person creating a sort of ghost effect.
I then tried a coloured film camera using the natural lighting to capture my images and had also began using more dynamic poses to make the images more interesting, however while doing so I had accidentally forgotten to wind the film or at least wind it properly which ended up giving a few images with double exposures which I really liked because it added a fantasy like
or mysterious layer to the images so I decided to make two of them my final pieces. Overall I believe I was successful in capturing clothing using photoshoots, lighting and poses however I feel as though I could have experimented more with creating my own cloths and using the outside landscape as a background instead of just using a black and white background.
