Contrast
My group examples
Chiaroscuro
Edward Weston
In this photo all the light is reflecting off the shell making it the main focus of the photo.
Another reason the shell is the main focus of the image is because it is really the brightest object in the image, also the background is completely blacked out so anything in front of it would be the main focus. In my opinion this makes the image a great example of contrast as he has captured light reflecting off a three-dimensional object. The outside of the shell seems to be bright where as the inside is quite dark and has a shadow. The light on the shell has also helps to capture the smooth texture of the of the curled top of the shell and the rough texture of the bottom half of the shell. I also think that he has positioned his source of light really well since you can see all the light shining on the shell and the background is blacked out. |
Trent Parke
I think Trent Parke is making the main focus in this image is the white figure, this is mainly because most the light is shining on that figure also making the background seem even darker.
The light shining on the figure is so dark you cant actually see the persons face or what they're wearing. This picture almost looks like something out of a horror or si-fi movie. The darkness appears to be the most dominant than light which actually gives the image a horror theme. I also this this image was taken at sunset because it looks like theres a little bit of light coming from the distance. |
Borzui
Borzui takes a lot of interesting pictures from land to sea and even the sky.
He mostly takes pictures of people posing in all sorts of different ways and always has a nice balance of contrast. He also has a good sense of composition as all his photos have different variety each time. He often likes to disguise his models changing there face or covering it in some sort of way. |
My practice experiment with an 8mm app
Dark room experiments
The images weren't to hard to produce but if there was any change to how long the light was shone on to the photographic paper or how high or low the aperture was would have a different effect on how the images came out.
For these images i put the aperture on 8 and shone the light on the photographic paper for 10 seconds. For my first to experiments I think it turned out pretty well but that may change because I intend to do more experiments, changing the aperture and time so the next experiments may end up looking lighter or darker or end up wrong all together. |
Other experiments
For these images i tried to think more about the composition and tried to capture the fine texture of the rain and thought a lot about my background.
i also asked someone to pose in the two pictures to help with my composition.
i tried to do something similar to an artist i had researched since i really liked the way he composed his pictures and i also like how he uses a very nice balance of contrast, he perfectly uses natural lighting and shadows to position people at the right angles.
As i was taking these pictures i was trying to reflect what borzui done in a way and use natural lighting and shadows to compose my pictures making sure that i had captured what I was aiming for.
My favourite is the fourth one because i really like the balance of the light on one half of the image and the darkness of the other half. i have also managed to capture some lines and the small molecules of rain which i really like.
Next time i am going to take picture like these in black and white as i feel as though it will capture the contrast a bit better.

Experiments outside
For these images i tried to make it so the lighting would reflect off one side off their body while another part of their body would look a bit more shaded/darker.
I also attempted to capture some shadows which didn't really turn out how i wanted it to since the shadows wasn't clear enough but this was only because the settings on the camera wasn't right meaning the shadows wasn't gonna be dark enough.
Some of the images were also brighter than i wanted it to be which meant that you couldn't really see the shaded part as much but i did still manage to capture the light reflection which is good.
I made sure to choose a sort of empty background to keep the main focus on the models i had.
Again trying to reflect the composition of borzuis work, using models, capturing the image at certain angles, and shading the image in black and white.
