Unit 1 Evaluation
During the very beginning of the course we experimented with various techniques and processes which included experimentation in the darkroom such as: pinhole photography, photograms, and cyanotype which were just small experiments. This was the first opportunity for me to use the darkroom and I learnt a lot from this such as how to use light within my experiments and I think that this helped me with using light within the personal projects. We then started various longer, extended projects where we further experimented and developed techniques.
The first extended project was 'edges' where I took photographs using iPods and DSLR cameras. At first I started taking pictures of random objects but my plan later changed once I found a photographer called Randy Grskovic. He really inspired me because he takes photographs of landmarks and just really any area, he then edits the image by taking a portion of the image and reorganises it so the image just looks slightly out of place. I took that idea and then tried to make my own versions, I printed out the pictures that I had took and then began to cut them into random and/or different shapes and reorganised the shape of the image. This was successful as I managed to keep the original image but it looked more interesting and more exciting. It was fun to do as I realised that photography could be a lot more interesting and there was more to photography than just taking photographs. For my final experiments
My second extended project was contrast and this was where I really put a lot of focus into good lighting and camera angles. I really enjoyed the first group experiment we done which was portraiture using studio lighting. We got to use large lights and a DSLR cameras, we also managed to capture really good images in black and white which made the pictures turn out really well as you could really see the contrast of the light on the people and the dark background. I then began researching other photographers and how they capture contrast. I ended up researching three photographers and their names are Edward Weston, Trent Parke and Borzui. The photographer I mostly took an interest with, in the end was Borzui, his work captures contrast really well or at least the way I wanted to do my work so I tried to base the rest of my experiments around his work as it helped me to choose better angles and make sure that my lighting was good. I also decided to use people in me pictures as well, as I felt it helped me capture contrast a lot more better.
My third extended project was abstraction and this is when I began to focus on shapes and patterns and my research was a big help as shown on my pinterest and the pictures I had found. While using a DSLR I took pictures a lot more closer to the object I was trying to take a picture of as I thought you could capture more detail that way, for example lines on walls, rectangle shapes on vents, and patterns on the ground.
