Elliott Erwitt
At the age of ten 1939 Elliot's family immigrated to the United States where he started studied photography and film making at the Los Angeles City College and the New School for Social Research. He had finished his education in 1950 and by the time it was 1953 he was able to join the Magnum Photos Agency allowing him to shoot photography projects around the world. He is now an advertising and documentary photographer mainly known for his black and white truthful and straightforward pictures of crazy, wild, ironic situations of everyday life. |
The background has been blurred so that the focus is mainly on the two men and and what is reflected off the glasses.
The sun light is shining on top of their heads and reflecting off their helmet The colour of the picture is black and white which make the men and what is reflected in the glasses stand out. The two men seem to be guarding something. The image looks very calm It looks like he was standing out of their way and zoomed in because it doesn't looks like their not getting fed up with him. It looks like used a lens because he is trying to isolate the two men and draw us closer to them. I'd call it the two men because there really the main focus. If I could I'd ask the photographer, what were the two men doing? And, are they at the sea side? |
Street photographers use cropping when taking photos because they may not like something thats in the picture.
They might just want the viewer to focus on a certain part of the image. Cropping the image may also leave the viewer asking more questions Also, they use shadows because they might like the surrealism of the shadow in the image, maybe showing a weird reflection as well. |
For my images, i have tried to take pictures of half an object or half a person.
i have also managed to capture some shadows and reflection while cropping an image. The contrast in most of my images is quite dim. For most of my images i have looked straight on to take a picture or looked down to take pictures of someones legs. There is one image where i have taken an image of a boy at an angle but also cropping the upper part of his body. |
Today we watched a film about street photography and i saw how scary it actually is to get in peoples face and take pictures and is still quite hard to even ask to take a picture of them.
After we had quite a few difficult tasks which was to be independent and to not take pictures of the usual suff we would take pictures of. We also had to take a little bit of a risk which was going into classes and taking pictures of six formers. I like this image because it is surreal the way the reflection makes it look like the class is working out side, though my main focus was gonna be on the class working.
The image almost looks like the top half is bright and the bottom half is dark. |
My street photography
In the 1st image i think it think demonstrates triangles because the image is showing movement and connects three people making a triangle.
There are also many triangles in the 2nd photo in between most of these objects, theres 4 on the door, in the ladders, and the bottom right corner.

The rule of thirds is using grid of nine squares, it helps to separate elements or subjects in an image that you or someone else is taking.
It also helps to set up your composition making your composition a bit more organised. They're almost like guide lines again to help with your composition. What ive learnt about the rule of thirds is thats it helps to leave gaps or objects in between each subject or element. It also helps you to focus on not putting the subject in the middle all the time and more on putting the subject more to the side of |
i think this was an successful image to show the rule of thirds because i when i was taking a photo of this i was trying to capture three people but (thinking about the rule of thirds) put them in three separate columns.
This image was quite hard to take because some people kept on moving every time i was gonna take the picture and i had to be quick and position my self and the camera. i have cropped this image to get the top half of the image out because it wasn't really relevant. |
i chose this image as an unsuccessful because when taking the picture i was rushing to capture my own shadow and three other students shadow (again trying to put three different people in to three seperate columns but this time with shadows) but as you can see i failed to capture the third student.
I also didn't position the camera properly and the shadows were kind of diagonal which probably would have crossed the columns. i did also crop this image because again the top half of the image wasn't really relevant. |

In most my images they are just still objects or elements going diagonal somewhere along the photo.
Most my images don't show many light colours making the image quite dull |
Similarities
Both images has a person who has noticed the photographer taking a picture of them and a person who has not noticed the photographer taking a photo of them, they also have someone doing something in the background.
Both images show at least one or two people at an older age not showing much emotion in the image and are being quite dull.
The images appear to be in the day light which give the people in the photographs a bit of a glow.
The two people in front of the photos both seem to have been cropped but the people in the background are not cropped.
Both these images show diagonal lines as well, in both the images the people are placed diagonally going right.
I both the image the women are wearing black and both the men are wearing white.

Differences
One obvious difference that i would like to point out is William Kleins image is in black and white where as Fred Herzog has colour, the main colour being red because its the colour that pops out the most to me.
In Freds image you can see that there are shadows where as in Williams images you cant see any shadows.
In Williams image you can see that there is one person showing happiness where as Freds image have people showing no emotions at all.
In Freds image the people appear to be in a high street but in Williams image they appear to be in a park or a back garden.

I took the first image as a response to the rule of thirds by making a decision of not making the figure dominant in a certain area of the image. At first when I look at the image the boy who is on the right hand side looks like the main focus of the image, but as I look on my eyes are also attracted to the figure on the left of the image and the light which is reflected on the wall. The pole which is slightly left of centre breaks the image up into sections.
For my second image i have tried to focus on putting the boy and the window in a row in the middle but i was rushing to capture this image which is why the window has appeared to the side of the photo rather than the centre and also the boy had moved from the middle of the window which made me fail at what i was trying to capture in the first place.
For the third image i have put the bin on the bottom right of the image and have made it the main focus but that bit of shadow is still quite noticeable.

What i have learnt from this video is, he shows that you need to be quick and try not make your self obvious when taking a photo of someone so that the person doesn't change their facial expression or their stance as they would be shocked or angry.
But if you are not taking a picture of someone, but you are taking an image of a animal or object then you just have to be quick. Try to look for echoes when |
SurfacesFor this challenge i have tried to get up and close so i could really capture the texture of all the surfaces, i also took the images up close so the main focus was on the surfaces.
Though when taking street images i know that the surfaces wont always be the main focus but the background. The images look really interesting up close as well because you can see all the bumps, lumps, cracks etc. |

My 4 best images
i like this image because it shows the chaotic life in a high street, i say this because you can see all the people trying to get around and all bunched together or trying to go shopping.
Though, the man closest to the shot on the left looks as though he was just going for a stroll also looking like the odd one out of everything that was going on around him. He also has quite a lot of space around him and is not bunched together with everyone else, he looks almost more at peace than everyone else. |
I also like this picture because this little high street alley way looks really peaceful compared to how crazy it is when you walk out to the street.
This image also, almost look like a movie where the character reaches a dead end in an alley way and is blocked off by the person trying to capture him/her. I also like how the water on the ground looks as though it is trying to reach the car. The textures on the wall and the ground look quite rough. The foreground is a little dark and leads out into the background which is really bright. |
When i was passing this area on the street it drew my attention because it is almost as though the house in the background is of higher importance than all the houses on the sides.
It is also like the two sides are being separated the bag house in the background is keeping them together, the colours of the houses and cars almost mirror each other as well. |
This was another place that drew my attention because it got me thinking, because rough textures and dark old looking background show that there probably was a lot of life in this place.
This image also shows some good examples of triangles the ones most noticeable are on the door but there are more with in the building. |
